Summary

Aftermath

One night. 12,500 missiles. Seven point nine billion lives ended in fire and silence.

The world is ash. Cities are craters. The air itself is poison.

Izzy Conner, twenty, steps out of a Chicago bunker carrying nothing but his mother’s final promise and a radio that still crackles with faint voices. Diana and Hannah Miller, sisters from Austin, Texas, emerge from their buried shelter with two bikes, a handful of supplies, and the stubborn refusal to let hope die with everything else.

Three strangers. Three separate paths through a poisoned continent. One fragile thread: voices on a dying frequency, giving directions, warnings, and the only thing worth fighting for... someone to reach.

In a landscape of melted highways, abandoned barricades, and the slow decay of what used to be civilization, survival is no longer about staying alive. It’s about finding the people who make staying alive mean something.

A gripping post-nuclear odyssey of trust, endurance, and the quiet courage it takes to choose each other when the world has chosen nothing at all.

I enjoy a good trek in a post apocalyptic wasteland. The characters were solid and I think the world was believable enough.

The story has a good premise and some strong characters, you'll find yourself willing Izzy, Diana and Hannah along in their quest for safety. The "bad" protagonists were a bit underplayed, but presented sufficient drama in the story to keep it engaging. I liked the ending.
My only criticism would be that the overall recording could benefit from some "proof listening", there are countless occasions where the narrator checks her pronunciation of a word or phrase, but it hasn't been edited out, so certain words or phrases are delivered twice.
Overall I enjoyed the story, it has all of the components of a good post-apocalyptic tale, without becoming overly gory, fantastical or bleak.

This book and the characters drew me in straight away. Following an end of the world event the world as we know it is gone. Three survivors emerge from their bunkers, two sisters and Izzy who have never met but make contact over their walkie talkies. Their journey to safety is an arduous one and bonds are formed that cannot be broken. The narration was a real bonus and helped to bring the novel to life. Highly recommended.
