The mental health crisis is not something happening "out there"—it's happening inside our churches. Pastors are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, and trauma in their congregations and in their own lives. Many feel overwhelmed, under-resourced, and unsure where pastoral care ends and professional help begins.

In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Gary Patton—a chaplain and counselor—along with Mitchell Burch and Scott Beha, to help us think biblically, compassionately, and practically about mental health and the church. This conversation is not about turning pastors into therapists. It's about helping the church respond with wisdom, humility, and Christ-centered care.

We'll start by naming the crisis—what mental health challenges are most common among congregants and what pastors and ministry leaders themselves are experiencing. Dr. Patton will help us establish a biblical framework for understanding mental and emotional health, pointing to Scripture's honest portrayal of the inner life and the biblical figures who experienced deep emotional distress.

The discussion tackles hard questions: How should the church think about counseling, therapy, and medication in light of faith? How do we avoid false spiritual guilt around mental illness? What's the danger of trying to "Bible-verse" our way through clinical issues? We'll also explore grief as both a mental and spiritual reality, examining what healthy grief looks like and how unresolved grief impacts long-term mental health.

For pastors feeling caught between caring deeply and feeling unqualified, we'll clarify the pastor's role when people bring serious mental health struggles. Where should healthy boundaries be drawn? How can pastors walk with people without trying to fix them?

You'll also hear practical, realistic ways churches can respond—creating referral pathways, training leaders, building partnerships, and fostering a culture that reduces stigma and encourages honesty.

In the middle of the crisis, there is hope. We'll close by exploring what the gospel offers to those struggling with mental health challenges and how the presence of Christ meets people in their suffering.

If you're a pastor or church leader feeling overwhelmed by these issues, this episode offers the encouragement, clarity, and hope you need.
