Where the shore bends out of sight things move below. Under moving waves wet sand slides down slopes. Shapes change without making a sound when currents go through. Midnight gets long then it gets quiet when people at the docks mention it. That word spreads through alleys goes up fire escapes where windows shut quickly. It's not exactly fear. A heavy feeling people carry without needing an explanation.
A few people say they saw things did things. Those stories disappear when the sun hits the ground. It stays, passed around slowly like loose change nobody bothers to pick up. Hawk Shadow. Some people say he might not have a face. When sailors try to talk about it, they get stuck. Now each night ends with looks out into the dark. Food disappears at sea. Shows up later near where people are really hungry.
When dusk comes quiet voices sneak out of Dock City moving into places that're not on maps. Under each story someone walks quietly. What they do is hidden from everyone. Around them it's really quiet like morning fog. The things people cheer for come from work that nobody sees. Luck when you look closely comes from doing things Out in the dark beyond city lights conflict still moves around
