Summary

A disgraced noble. A scandalous widow. A poisoned prince.

When a foreign prince collapses at an English court function, suspicion falls on Lord Peregrine Fitzroy—the estranged son of a notorious traitor, and the man who knows all too well the effects of henbane especially since it's the same poison his mother once used in a crime that nearly cost Lady Charity Cresswell everything.

Now a widow and lady-in-waiting to the Queen, Charity has clawed her way back from scandal to reclaim her place among the ton. But when the prince's symptoms trigger memories of a past she's tried to bury, she suspects something far more dangerous is afoot—and that Lord Peregrine is at the heart of it.

Forced into an uneasy alliance, Peregrine and Charity must navigate a web of court intrigue, political conspiracy, and buried secrets. As the body count rises and a shadowy enemy closes in, they'll have to rely on each other to uncover the truth before the next victim is the Crown itself.

For fans of C.S. Harris, Anna Lee Huber, Cara Devlin, and Deanna Raybourn, Brilliance and Betrayal is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers Regency mystery filled with espionage, forbidden romance, and high-stakes deception.

Love this narrator.

The story continues from the previous series, but these protagonists are unlikeable. Charity has clearly just dumped the little stepson to go to London, and Fitzroy seems a bully and a bore. Why on earth they don’t just go home and manage their wealth and enjoy their privilege is anyone’s guess, because all the intrigue seems trivial and pointless. The Queen is portrayed as more like Elizabeth the first than the real Q Charlotte!
