I eagerly anticipate the arrival of each new Ikmen story and Sean Barrett as its narrator. This one focuses on the Syrian community exiled in Turkey among other things rather than the latest Turkish political scene. The story has different strands which are interweaved. With a book there is often a list of personnel to help but with foreign names it can be confusing. Saying that I worked out who was who. With this series it really is essential to start at the beginning as the characters and plots build throughout the series. Really enjoyed the book although some bits were gruesome but that is crime fiction. Looking forward to the next Hakim and Arnold book written by Barbara Nadel another great series.

Previously I have very much enjoyed books by Barbara Nadel. This one had a familiar setting (good) and familiar characters (good) but a storyline that went all round the houses in tedious knots. I’m no prude, quite broad-minded in fact, but I got bored with the sexual references and people feeling each other up. The LGBTQ+ themes were definitely key to the plot but took far too long to become apparently relevant. It was a relief when there we’re only two hours left and events began to come together and make sense. I couldn’t recommend this particular audiobook that took up so many hours of my listening time.
