Persecuting witches? Didn’t that fall out of fashion in the seventeenth century?
Toby has always imagined so.
Why then is his great friend Mabel the hedge witch—a witch who actually lives in a hedge—coming in for so much strife from her local community?
That would be because a popular young man has been found dead and all the signs indicate a ritualistic murder.
When the police fail to identify a suspect, the locals need somewhere to pin the blame and therefore scapegoat poor Mabel. From the tone of the letters to the local newspaper, and the posts on Facebook, anyone would think Britain was returning to a time of burning and pillorying!
When Mabel’s elderly cat Merrybutton reaches out in anguish, spellbound hound Toby can’t refuse. There’s something grimly fiendish at work here and Toby will need all of his cunning, wiles, magic and sass to get to the bottom of it and unearth the killer!
From the bestselling author of the popular Wonky Inn books comes Toby the schnauzer-collie-whippet-terrier-thingie’s latest adventure.
Grimly Fiendish is Book 9 in the Spellbound Hound series. While you can listen to it as a standalone, a knowledge of the earlier books certainly doesn’t hurt. I mean … when did hearing about puppies, kitties, rats, foxes and hedgehogs ever hurt anyone?

Yep you guessed it, I loved this book and the author's imagination. Where else are you going to find the best leads being provided by rats? Or said rats going on investigations. Is you mind boggling yet? Let's just say it is highly unusual but very entertaining. If you are new to the series and wondering what on earth I am going on about, let me explain the story is told from the perspective of Toby the spellbound hound, a Schnauzer, whippet, collie something or other and his favourite things other than sandmiches (that's sandwiches to you and me) is solving mysteries. He does this mostly aided by other animals, that he can talk to and the chaos beginnings but boy does he have fun while doing it.
The mystery unfolded quickly, while it's not really a question suspects and follow up on alibi's type of mystery of is still good and cleverly worked, especially the way the animals have to go about getting clues. I can't wait for the next book.
When Clarissa gets a phone call about an unusual death, as a reporter it's her job to cover the story but
as the spellbound hound Toby believes it's his job to investigate. Especially with the ritual aspects to the case means they friend Mabel comes under fire. Mabel moves in with Clarissa and Toby but so does the only witnesses to the murder a family of rats and when there lives are threatened Toby moves them in too, only until the case is solved and for there protection. The rats provide a description and surprisingly they have a lead to follow. Can they find the killer and get there home back before the rats totally destroy Toby's bed?
I like the narrator. He used his voice well to provide distinct and individual voices for the characters.
