'Times like these you wish you had something to pray to'

Idolfire is an epic sapphic fantasy inspired by the fall of Rome from the author of the Frontier and Floating Hotel.

ON ONE SIDE OF THE WORLD, Aleya Ana-Ulai is desperate for a chance. Her family have written her off as a mistake, but she's determined to prove every last one of them wrong.

ON THE OTHER, Kirby of Wall's End is searching for redemption. An ancient curse tore her life apart, but to fix it, she'll have to leave everything behind.

Fate sets them both on the path to Nivela, a city once poised to conquer the world with the power of a thousand stolen gods. Now the gates are closed and the old magic slumbers. Dead - or waiting for a spark to light it anew . . .©2025 Grace Curtis

Charming and insightful, tender yet honest, Curtis's journey into fantasy is worth following where all roads lead - deeper into the heart
Idolfire combines classic, cozy adventure with character-driven drama for an end result that's both delightful and inspiring
Idolfire is a delectable adventure . . . an ode to female friendship and power. Curtis uses her considerable talents to paint a rich, intricate world and makes it impossible not to fall in love with sweet Kirby and firebrand Aleya

Overall I really enjoyed this. Not the ending I was hoping for otherwise it would have been 5 stars. But beautifully written, I engaged with the characters and the performance was outstanding.

I found this book deeply frustrating to read. The writing veers wildly between moments of genuine brilliance and passages that are frankly, dreadful. At times it is beautifully descriptive (lingering at length on inconsequential details like a vase) while paradoxically rushing through the moments that actually matter. Too often the narrative tells rather than shows, particularly during key emotional beats.

As a result, I struggled to connect with the characters and felt no real chemistry between the two women at the centre of the story. By the time I put the book down, I found myself largely indifferent to what happened to either of them... or to the annoyingly pointless, cockroach of a misogynist male who trails after them and seems to exist solely as the embodiment of uselessness.

As a wlw, I truly wanted to love this book, which made the experience all the more disappointing. Unfortunately, despite pushing on, I ultimately gave up roughly three hours from the end.

Frustrating
