Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

Sociology, history, breathtaking storytelling. If you don't weep at the end, are you even human?

Incredible

Hard work but I can't help thinking Hugo might have made it so on purpose. You have to really commit to get through it but I if I never read anything better I won't be disappointed.

Life changing.

Loved it till the end, the songs sang by narator were a bit awkward but all together a fine listening

Perfect

Performance is excellent - you can always tell which character is talking.
Very moving story.
However, a large part of the book is unnecessary padding and the sung bits were a bit irritating

Epic story but long-winded

Some time ago, I read a review on the literature network online that Victor Hugo’s masterpiece spent too much time on the ‘frivolities’ & seemed to go off on unexplainable tangents, which in some peculiar way detracted from the overall story.
In all probability this critic was more a fan of the numerous musical versions of this incredible tale which exist, so i’ll leave his criticisms there.
Taking his story overall, it’s simply too genial to describe, and all the parts which would seem to go off at a tangent (Waterloo being a superb example) are absolutely necessary. (Waterloo being an introduction to Thenardier & his impact on the story) and quite simply is masterful storytelling.
Nothing disappoints, including Bill Homewood’s superb narration & voice characterisations.
Please forget every screen adaptation and ghastly musical (I wish Hugo would have wrote a clause expressly banning his work being made into a musical) and listen to this.
You will not be disappointed.
Genius.
