Nauseating pre school delivery of reading. Yuk. Pity as a good book. Unbelievable poor production choice.

Bad narration

Francis Spufford’s novel deserves way better than this appalling, hammy narration. It’s a great book , well written, which explores profound themes without undermining plot and character. But how this narrator was considered an appropriate choice is a mystery. Avoid the audible version- read the book!

Great book, ruined by narration

I loved this book and thought the narration was excellent. Each individual story was beautifully told and it had a vivid sense of place.

Outstanding

Wish I’d read further down in the reviews…

An enjoyable series of concurrent tales across time which were both human and relatable. Characters and situations were well painted and varied making it a story that I wanted to whizz through.

I found the performance awful with a level of overacting that drew attention away from the book. The general tone, as if performing to children was incredibly incongruous to such a beautiful book and such a miss. Some terrible accents bordering on offensive in place too. Don’t think I could stomach another book read by the narrator. Such a shame

Great book but an unfortunate performance

as a dedicated South Londoner born in north London and schooled in Peckham and East Dulwich before moving to Welling and now living in Sidcup via Belvedere and Bow, this story really resonates with me. I know Becksford is fictional but I really really would like to meet Francis down the pub to talk over the old places and times. We probably went to the same school? Who knows. tt was the exact kind of descriptive listen that I like allowing me to picture exactly what is going on and where it is. The narrator was bloody marvellous as well with all the right voices, sounds and inclinations that enhance the the wording perfectly. Thoroughly recommended and if Francis is reading this, get in touch and I will buy you that beer or white wine if you prefer, Bazzer
