Listened for about 3 hours but just couldn't get into this. It's the first Amis I've ever tried and unfortunately his writing style isn't for me. It feels like he's over used the thesaurus instead of keeping things simple. Perhaps style over substance?

I read this in the 80s, when it was meant to be read, when I was a young and cynical. It was great.
I read it now and its a very well-written and viciously misogynistic novel that has aged badly like John Self.
However, Steven Pacey may well be a genius. He could read a phonebook, if one still existed, and give it humour and nuance and irony

Remember this is set in the eighties, hence what was, although slightly embellished, the normal but bizarre behaviour of the protagonist and all those around him. It has now became almost an historical novel which some must see with a degree of disbelief. As to the unbelievable goings on, belive me, stuff like that happened.

Steve Pacey narrates with a joie de vivre that compliments the text perfectly.

This is one of the best-narrated audiobooks I've ever listened to. Pacey nails the voices, especially the weary transatlantic sarcasm of the protagonist-narrator John Self. The novel is a classic of 'skaz,' so it lends itself to being read aloud. It captures in brilliant detail the tacky unpleasantness of the early 1980s and of movie stars in general.
