Summer. Massachusetts.

An old Silver Wraith with a frightening history. A story about one serial killer and his lingering, unfinished business.

Anyone could be next.

We're going to Christmasland . . .

NOS4A2 is an old-fashioned horror novel in the best sense. Claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying, this is a story that will have you on the edge of the seat while you read, and leaving the lights on while you sleep. With the horrific tale of Charles Manx and his Silver Wraith, Joe Hill has established himself as the premiere horror and supernatural thriller writer of his generation.

Critic reviews

Hill's nightmarish, devilish protagonist is Charlie Manx - who uses his supernatural powers in his ghastly mission to kidnap and kill dozens of children... and to scare the living bejesus out of the readers... This book is well-written, extremely dark and awfully gruesome.
will delight horror/fantasy fans...Steven King's son has the same knack as his dad for telling gruesome magical tales
A deliciously horrific fantasy...the work of a talented and evolving storyteller whose pages sure do turn.
Genuinely scary

What made the experience of listening to NOS4R2 the most enjoyable?

It's an audio page turner. I listened to it on a long drive through the night. I was wary of stopping in a service station in case there were monsters waiting for me. THAT'S how scary it is!

What other book might you compare NOS4R2 to, and why?

As good as Joe Hill's other books.

What does Kate Mulgrew bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Kate Mulgrew has the strangest voice, passing between biker chick, fat, bear-like dad, teenage son, ancient evil, downtrodden rapist and stammering librarian seamlessly. She's either is one very talented or one very mentally ill individual.

Creepy as f*ck

Not as good as "Horns", his previous book, but still a good listen.

A car seems to have the ability to drain the life out the kids it kidnaps and bestow it to a deranged old man. Nobody has ever escaped its clutches until now, and it wants its revenge.

From the first 5 minutes to the last word, I was totally entertained. I had never read any of Joe Hill books before and to be honest this was an impulse buy but I didn’t regret it in the slightest.

This book is so descriptive that it takes you to the characters highs and lows. This leads to the only negative point in the book – that is the main characters are created in such a way that it takes little imagination to visualise them in front of you. A bit like a Victoria sponge, easy to identify and enjoyable to eat but can be slightly boring as there is no surprises.

Nevertheless, this is an enjoyable listen. I love the way that Vic McQueen is the heroine but is still human, a mother who tries her hardest even when there is so much staked against her. The author has managed to cram in so many twists and turns that it keeps you totally engaged. Just as you think that you could turn it off the story takes a dark turn and begs to be listen too for just another 10 mins (that turns into the next 30 mins).

There is a theory that everything in this world originates in our thoughts and feelings and this novel takes this idea to a whole new level. The author builds delicate and sinister inner worlds called inscapes and transports you there. Christmas Land a place all children would love to go but all parents fear.

The narrator was fabulous as well. She is easy to listen to and not once did I have to rewind. She brings the characters to life and it is easy to work out which personality is speaking.

Loved it

Ok so maybe 'pleasant' isn't the appropriate word for this genre, but it works. Let's be honest, I picked up this book because of who the author's father is.  I also am a fan of Kate Mulgrew as an actress so thought it would be an interesting listen

I started it a few months ago, had a bit of trouble getting into it, both story and narration.   After buying because of who was reading it, I now wasn't sure if I liked Kate Mulgrew as a narrator (she was my first female narrator and my previous couple of books were narrated by Will Patton).  I don't think I even finished the first chapter.

Anyway, I set it aside, listened to a couple of autobiographies, then had a few long car journeys coming up so decided to give it another try.

2nd time was the charm.  I LOVE this book.  Forget who the author's father is, the book stands up well without needing that.  The characters were excellent, flawed, human.  The story well written and executed.  No shortcuts here.  Everything had a place.  Creepy, scary, frustrating, sad.  The full gamut of emotions was run here.  I couldn't stop listening.  I looked for excuses to drive (most of my audiobook time is in the car) so I could listen. I was absolutely hooked!

And my worries about Kate Mulgrew as narrator were completely unfounded.  My initial interest in her as narrator wasn't misplaced and the story was enhanced by her reading of it.  So I'm not quite sure why it didn't work for me on the first try.  I'm very glad I persevered, and would be interested in hearing something else read by her.

I also appreciated the afterward where the author shared some autobiographical info as well as some insight behind the writing of the book.  Personal touches like that are always interesting to me.

Anyway, I have purchased one of his other books based on this one, and I would absolutely recommend this book if you are a fan of the genre.  Give it a shot, you'll be glad you did.  Just beware, Christmas may never be the same!

A Pleasant Surprise
