It's the summer of 1939. London is on the brink of catastrophic war. Iris Hawkins, an ambitious young woman in the stuffy world of City finance, has a chance encounter with Geoff, a technical whizz at the BBC's nascent television unit.

What was supposed to be one night of abandon draws her instead into an adventure of otherworldly pursuit - into a reality where time bends, spirits can be summoned, and history hangs by a thread. Soon there are Nazi planes overhead. But Iris has more to contend with than the terrors of the Blitz. Over the rooftops of burning London, in the twisted passages between past and present, a fascist fanatic is travelling with a gun in her hand.

And only Iris can stop her from altering the course of history forever.

Just great-mysticism, spying, love story, feminine power- all rolled into one. One thing you can expect from Spufford- he never descends into vulgarity. Now, he absolutely must write a follow up, he bloody broke my heart!

I loved everything about this audiobook . The story is a different slant on the usual time travel epic .. and that is actually is only a very small part of the story. It mixes references across a range of fantasy and mythology. At its heart it’s a love story of people, places and a time in recent history. The narrator is one of the best - and I listen to a lot of audio. Not forced or over acted. Really really good . Very pleased that there is sequel planned for next year .. that’s a relief …

Excellent

I just love this book. Thanks Francis for spending ages writing it for us. You captured my life for 4 days and I simply wanted to listen and be there during those dangerous difficult years of the blitz. The fantasy element captures one and becomes almost believable. Please write us another! I didn’t miss any of the analogies or quotes by the way.

Super fantasy/thriller

Great characters brought Alice by the narrator. The central character is a pleasure to get to know. Hope we see her again.
