A brand-new recording of the classic work, narrated by Holliday Grainger, star of The Borgias and The Capture.
On a trip to the South of France, a shy young woman falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower. Although his proposal comes as a surprise, she happily agrees to marry him. But as they arrive at her husband's home, Manderley, a change comes over Maxim, and the young bride is filled with dread. Friendless in the isolated mansion, she realises that she barely knows him. In every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, and the new Mrs de Winter walks in her shadow.
Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the other woman. An international bestseller, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

I thought that I knew the novel ‘Rebecca’: Quite familiar with Ms Grainger’s voice from BBC
Radio , I was almost put off by several criticisms of her pronunciation: I finally chose her reading, as it is the only one I could find that is unabridged::
This is important, as du Maurier’s original work contains some very beautiful descriptive passages that I had never come across before - what comes through is the Author’s love for the environment of her own beloved homeland in Cornwall, as well as the already well-known mystery of ‘Rebecca’, as portrayed in several silly movies!
Mrs Danvers, here - far from being a cardboard cutout gothic figure - is portrayed as a real obsessive, with genuine emotions:
I have always loved the dream ‘prologue’ - the way that, from the very first word, we’re right in the dream, with the girl: but in the unabridged version, we also get a glimpse of the ‘aftermath’ - the gentle resignation, almost like a couple who have lost a child, living from day to day, without expectations…
I recommend this reading, which left a profound impression on me, both as a Mystery, & as an exploration of deep emotions!

BRILLIANT & UNABRIDGED!

Rebecca is a powerful novel that visits themes of gender roles, of identities, dualities, of marriage and feminism

Dark, eery novel

great storytelling. overall the narrator was calm enough to give the book a serene tone and dramatic enough at the dramatic parts. it was a living, breathing story.

amazing narration

Despite the outdated views (mainly the casual racism) this is a great book and story that withstands the test of time. At its core, Rebecca is a story of female surrender to male dominance. As noted by Sally Beauman in the After, both Rebecca and our unnamed narrator suffer the deprivation of the identity through their marriage to Maxim. The plot is a little slow in places, as I imagine life was back then, and you do really get to enjoy the art of conversation, and where it lacks or is clipped/short, it adds to the tension of the scenes. Ultimately, the narrators fascination with the ex-wife (and worse, the immortal-through-death ex) is a universal experience and one which enables the story to live on so well. The missing information/hinted information is a device employed superbly by Du Maurier and it’s no wonder several books eager to continue Rebecca’s ghost have spun off. Rebecca is absolutely a cautionary tale for women whether they are passive and desperate to please the narcissistic man in their life, or whether they wish to terrorise them with an equal sadism. My favourite characters were Bea and Frank and I did wish our narrator could have ended up with Frank but hey ho. As for the audio narration this was well done and I felt lent itself greatly to the novel.

A great classic
