About this listen

"NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.

“Red Rising ascends above a crowded dystopian field.”—USA Today Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.” “I live for you,” I say sadly. Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Performed by Stewart Crank, John Kielty, Richard Rohan, Stephanie Németh-Parker, Jenna Sharpe, Kay Eluvian, Jon Vertullo, Ian Russell, Alejandro Ruiz, Andrew Colford, Bradley Foster Smith, Christopher Williams, Chris Stinson, Christopher Walker, Colleen Delany, Elizabeth Jernigan, Eric Messner, Ian Putnam, James Konicek, Joe Mallon, Joel David Santner, Julie-Ann Elliott, Karen Novak, Ken Jackson, Lucy Symons, Marni Penning, Martin Dickinson, Matthew Bassett, Matthew Pauli, Matthew Schleigh, Michael Glenn, Michael John Casey, Nanette Savard, Nazia Chaudhry, Nora Achrati, Shanta Parasuraman, Stephone Walker, Dylan Lynch, Yasmin Tuazon and Andy Clemence.

This is my favourite series of all time and I was super excited to see graphic audio bring it to life. Overall the performance was extremely enjoyable, I think every fan of the series should have a listen. In my opinion it just highlights how amazing these books would be in a cinema format, at times I felt like I was in the same room as the characters and could picture the scenes so clearly.

The voice actor for Darrow did a phenomenal job, the switch between his red and gold self was seamless, and as well as his interactions with the other characters. I also really enjoyed Mustang and Nero.

Some of the other reviews have highlighted the discrepancies with the accents which I do agree with, would have preferred Irish actors for some of the red characters as it really does distract from the performance, particularly Eo and Harmony. Another issue I found was some of the voice actors for characters like Cassius, Jackal and Fitchner sounded older than the characters actually are, it did throw me off at times, especially for Cassius. I would hope this could be changed for the next book. I wasn't the biggest fan of Roque either, he didn't quite sound as I imagined him but that may be down to personal preference.

But overall I had an amazing time listening to this, even though I've read the series about 3 times already, this stopped me in my tracks more than once. I genuinely am looking forward to Golden Son.

I wasn't sure what I'd make of a cast narrating Red Rising. Tim Gérard Reynolds did such an outstanding job in the first audio book release.

I'm happy to say this was amazing. They captured each character perfectly. the music and sound effects add a new layer of detail that enhances the listening experience.

I've just downloaded part 2. Looking forward to getting started.

A friend of mine told me I had to look at this book. Listened to the whole thing without pause. The next day I did it again!
A truely fantastic work of fiction by Pierce Brown, preformed by an extraordinary cast and crew.
Loved every minute and cannot wait to finish the whole saga.
P.s When I when to my local book shop to pick up a hard copy both staff members were also massive fans! SO YOU KNOW IT'S GOOOOD XD

Cannot recommend enough!

The dramatized adaptation of Red Rising is outstanding. Full cast, sound design, cinematic score — it turns Pierce Brown's world into something closer to a movie than an audiobook. The Greco-Roman brutality of the Society, the Institute's Hobbesian chaos, the tension of Darrow's rise — the production elevates all of it. If you're into dark, gritty sci-fi that takes class warfare and political power seriously (think Dune's philosophy meets Roman antiquity in space), this is one of the best ways to experience it.

Tip: GraphicAudio produces these, and their own app is worth a look; you might find better deals, and they offer DRM-free.

It took a little while to get used to the style of this audiobook but very quickly I was hooked. I have immediately downloaded the next part. The story is building at a decent rate and has lots of potential going forward.
