EVOLUTION IS NO LONGER NATURAL • IT'S POLITICAL

When Gren Moritz is elected head of the global government of Rivennia, he is ridiculed and isolated by others in power for his stance against the rise in genetic engineering. Following his inauguration, Gren is lured into the dark shadows of the Liffdom Lodges, a covert gambling syndicate that controls Rivennia. The Lodgers promise political backing, but it comes at a price – Gren must partake in a macabre wager. His fellow players are anxious analyst Samuel Rosendale and sharp-tongued supermodel Primula Zhang. As the stakes rise and the Lodgers’ true motives come to light, the rivals form an unlikely alliance, forced to navigate a treacherous web of power. The future of civilisation hinges on the choices they make.

This story is set in a futuristic world that worships forced genetic modification. Chief Minister Gren Moritz starts out as a guy trying to do the right thing and protect human autonomy. Then comes the blackmail, and he gets dragged into a secret gambling syndicate called the Liffdom Lodges. An old queen tells him that in order to survive he has to leave his emotions at the door, and he does. He turns cold and learns how to beat the corrupt system at its own game.

Then there's Samuel Rosendale, a regular guy stuck in the middle of the chaos. He’s a low-level analyst who struggles with paralyzing anxiety. When he gets caught up in the conspiracy, he is terrified and wants to save his own skin. But everything changes when he connects with Primula Zhang. She's seen as a washed-up supermodel who only cares about high fashion, using a sarcastic attitude as a shield. Together, they are thrown into this covert gambling ring that is secretly deciding the genetic future of humanity. They share secrets and end up forming a bond that changes both of them.

The turning point in the whole story happens when Primula decides she is done being a pawn. She secretly uses her intellect to make a rogue bet in the Lodges to disrupt the syndicate. The gamble backfires in the worst way possible, leading to her sudden, quiet disappearance. This twist completely flips the script, turning a political drama into a dark thriller. Primula’s disappearance triggers Sam and forces him to step up as a real investigator. It also forces Gren to abandon his moral code and start playing dirty. By taking a risk and vanishing, Primula goes from a superficial celebrity to the actual spark that ignites the resistance. The audiobook’s dual narrators bring these characters to life, making the psychological dread feel entirely real as they try to survive a corrupt system.

I just finished Rivennia: A Game of Wagers, and wow—what an incredible debut. It starts a bit slow while it sets up the politics and the world, so you have to give it a little time, but the narrators, Scott Fleming and Gabrielle Nellis-Pain, do such an amazing job that I couldn’t stop listening. If you love dark dystopias, intense political scheming, and sci-fi that actually makes you think, you're going to love this one.
