The year is 1999. Returning to practice after a suspension for stealing opioids, a young Scottish doctor takes the only job he can find: a post as a senior house officer in the struggling east London hospital of St Luke’s.

Amid the maelstrom of sick patients, over-worked staff and underfunded wards a darker secret soon declares itself: too many patients are dying.

Which of the medical professionals our protagonist has encountered is behind the murders? And can our unnamed narrator’s version of the events be trusted?

What an absolutely great book. Loved all the little fact sections about real life healthcare murders. Great narrator, would absolutely recommend

Another stimulating story from Simon Stephenson. Informative and thought-provoking, with satisfying twists and turns.
You'll have to imagine the humour for yourself, though, since Miller Burns' narration makes everything sound bleak. The humour is in the text. Why are so many audio books read so flatly and with such little variation in emphasis? Let them speak naturally please! Do get Set My Heart to Five. That one is delightful.

Allow actors to act please

I read & listen a lot, and rarely write reviews, however this cracker of a book deserves one. The murder mystery was enjoyable, if guessable, but it was the spot on atmosphere it conjured, the very realistic portrayal of life as a junior doctor in an inner city hospital, and as an addict, that kept me hooked. The interspersing cases were interesting too. Presented by a spot on narrator whose voice perfectly suits the subject matter, I’d highly recommend it to all.

Compelling & intriguing with a pitch perfect narrator

I rarely write reviews- but I couldn’t not write one for this book because I loved it and want to recommend it. So well written. The humour yet seriousness of it was perfectly balanced. It’s a brilliant book! I listened to it in record time as I was so enthralled.
