Our homes are a reflection of us. They say something about ourselves, our families and who we are.

This book is about growing up in my mother's house from the 1970s in the inner city of Nottingham, England.

Each room in our house had a purpose, playing a part in our family life.

Through the stories and poems in each chapter of the book, you can take a glimpse into each room of the house and my experiences in a large Caribbean family, from child to adult.

The rooms of my mother's house may be different to yours, but they tell of belonging and becoming.

A journey which unites my stories with yours

Laura Serrant has a remarkable gift for capturing not only the details of home and family but also the emotions, values, and cultural heritage that shape who we are. As I read, memories I hadn't revisited in years came flooding back: the warmth of my grandparents' house, the always-open front door, the food, the laughter, and the strength that carried them through their own life's journey. It reminded me of the sacrifices they made and the legacy they worked so hard to pass on.

What touched me most was how this book renewed something within me. It made me realise how important it is not to let those memories fade or allow the culture my grandparents introduced me to disappear with time. Their traditions, stories, and values deserve to be remembered, celebrated, and passed on to future generations. This book inspired me to recommit myself to preserving that heritage and ensuring that their voices continue to be heard through the stories I share with my own child0.

Tales from My Mother's House is beautifully written, deeply moving, and profoundly relatable. Whether your memories are similar to mine or entirely your own, Laura Serrant's storytelling has a way of awakening the places and people that have shaped us. I closed the book with gratitude, nostalgia, and a renewed sense of purpose.

An inspiring, emotional story
