On the eve of his marriage to the beautiful Mercedes, having that very day been made captain of his ship, the young sailor Edmond Dantès is arrested on a charge of treason, trumped up by jealous rivals. Incarcerated for many lonely years in the isolated and terrifying Chateau d'If near Marseille, he meticulously plans his brilliant escape and extraordinary revenge.

Of all the "masked avengers" and "caped crusaders" in literature, The Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. Alexandre Dumas (père), master storyteller, takes us on a journey of adventure, romance, intrigue, and ultimately, redemption.

I had wished to read this book so many times over the years but after several false starts thought I might not get through this massive tome. Especially after my mother, a prolific reader herself had labelled it too boring to finish. Then I noticed that as I owned the kindle version the audible could be mine for less than a pound. I could not resist one last chance. Thank you Bill Homewood for making this masterpiece come to life. His narration was gripping. Each character got their own voice and accent. Truly wonderful to listen to and even after fifty hours I longed for more. This tale of greed, intrigue, revenge, love is amazing. I love how the game slowly plays out on a grand scale and the ending is magnificent. Dumas is a spider spinning the ultimate web to capture his prey, us the audience. For anyone who has just seen some two hour movie of this story, you have been robbed. Listen to this now and learn the greatest story of revenge every written.
Thanks to this audible version this book takes it's rightful place in my top five of all time.

An epic classic. Amazing audible version.

I have never read this title but always wanted to. Although the book is a very long one at over 51hrs, it was a very good listen. The Narrator Bill Homewood was great all the different voices. The story is complex and very interesting and definately worth a listen.

Great listen

The story itself, although obviously not written in the modern style of writing, is amazing. I was surprised at how engaging it was, since I meant to listen to it before sleep but ended up in a over 50-hour marathon. Needless to say the movies do not come even close to the complexity of the written story. The narration has to be acknowledged, but there were some things about it that I did not particularly liked. One was the obvious low quality of the sound, hence the low price of the book, if I recall correctly. And the other thing is that sometimes it feels that the narrator had created voices that didn't matched the characters. Some sounded older than their father and so on. But other than that kudos to him.

There is a reason why this book is a Classic

54 + hours of excellent narration by Bill Homewood and his many voices. The initial storyline leading to the incarceration of Edmund Dantes and the period of his imprisonment was excelellent. Similarly the period of his escape and journey into wealth was also a good read. I found that the countless conversations between the many characters seemed, to me, to lose the thread of the storyline of Dumas tale. Maybe an abridged version would find an easier path through the novel. It took me a month to get through alongside my other pastimes. Still, I am glad I listened to it.

Great Story Padded Out by countless conversations
