It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. A discreet advertisement in The Times, addressed to "Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine..." lures four very different women away from the dismal British weather to San Salvatore, a castle high above a bay on the sunny Italian Riviera. This is a real feel-good story. Eleanor Bron is an excellent reader who brings out the full humour of the dialogue, as well as doing full justice to the descriptions of Italy. Hearing it read aloud, as opposed to reading it from the page, totally enhances this classic book, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants a mental escape to a perfect destination.

Such a warm, witty book, a genuine pleasure. As a British person, I completely empathised with the utter relief we feel when we holiday in sunny climates. The narration was perfect.

I loved listening to this book. I had not read the author before and it felt like Jane Austen transported to the 1920s. It was such a touching story made all the more by the beautiful narration. She read it with just the right amount of clipped old fashioned accent but not so much it became a parody. Really recommend

I can’t fault this for story or narration. They fit together perfectly. The story is a hilarious satire of polite society of a bygone age. Mrs Fischer is exactly like a woman I’m unfortunate enough to have working for me, opinionated, bossy and judgemental and oblivious. The others are much nicer but equally well and cleverly observed and invented!
