Are you crying out for another woman who defies convention by... following the convention of becoming a warrior? Who no one believes in but herself? Who handily defeats bigger and stronger opponents... just because? Who may, in fact, be a lesbian? Who befriends an enemy -the only honourable soul among pirates- who just so happens to use they/them pronouns?

Are you ready for an anthology whose headlining story makes regular concessions to its story, characters, culture and common sense just for the sake of fitting that stuff in?

Well, if so, you've found your audiobook and good luck to you. If not, I'd give this one a miss - maybe read the Empire Trilogy instead.

Rokugan isn't supposed to be real life feudal Japan, but it isn't supposed to be the early 2020s either. If the author could put this stuff in organically, it'd be okay but anything else just comes across as ham-fisted and the story suffers. And if this is the headliner...

Let down by the author's need to ham-fistedly insert their own bias to the detriment of the story.
