In the small coastal city of Oran, Algeria, rats begin rising up from the filth only to die as bloody heaps in the streets. Shortly after, an outbreak of the bubonic plague erupts and envelops the human population. Albert Camus' The Plague is a brilliant and haunting rendering of human perseverance and futility in the face of a relentless terror born of nature.

The “narrators” view on life amidst everything around him falling apart

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the vibrant cast of characters who inhabit Oran. The narrator's unusual voice suits the tone of the narrative perfectly.

Captivating performance of a compelling story

I read this years ago when studying epidemiology. But thought to read it again during the real event! Fascinating!

I just finished The Stranger so was glad to see The Plague included. I really liked it at the start, although not very keen on the narrator, but then it lost me a little bit. There are bits where Camus resorts to ramblings that I started to tune out of- mainly the priest's, but also increasingly the conversations between the two doctors. Then there were several moments when I thought it was concluding and surely about to end but it went on and on, constantly concluding the same point over and over, and I got really impatient with it. It might say more about me- I used to have more patience for slow burn books...

it was ups and downs for me with this book

i love this book. I r read it for the first time 35 years ago. The pandemic had me pining for it's wisdom. It was nearly ruined by a reader who insisted on swilling a gobful of spit at the end of each sentence. i would have abandoned the entire project but for the magnificence of the writing. I gave the performance one star ONLY because I couldn't give it nil. It was utter shit

Do Not buy this performance of this fabulous book
