Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Railway Children by E. Nesbit, read by Jenny Agutter.

When Father is taken away unexpectedly, Roberta, Peter, Phyllis and their mother have to leave their comfortable life in London to go and live in a small cottage in the country. The children seek solace in the nearby railway station, and make friends with Perks the Porter and the Station Master himself. Each day, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis run down the field to the railway track and wave at the passing London train, sending their love to Father. Little do they know that the kindly old gentleman passenger who waves back holds the key to their father's disappearance.

I love this story so much. It’s one of my favourites of all time. Beautifully read and wonderful to listen to at bed time. I cried at the ending which was unexpected but not surprising.

Having seen both film versions of The Railway Children where Jenny Agutter first played the eldest daughter Bobbi and then the mother in the remake, it was fitting that you should have asked her to read the book for Audibles, I enjoyed it very much and it will be a book that I'll be listening to again and again along with the other books I have on both my mobile and tablet.
