Thraxas ekes out a living as a private investigator. He lives in the poor part of town, with a barbarian for a landlord, and a female ex-gladiator to help him when the fighting gets rough. Thraxas might be too jaded to feel any desire for the beautiful Makri, with her Elvish and Orcish blood, but he appreciates her lethal combat skills. Thraxas once learned a little magic, but he's a hopeless sorcerer. On the other hand, he's brave, loyal to his clients, and he's a legend at the dining table. Thraxas can out-eat and out-drink anyone. When his investigations involve hostile sorcerers, sword-wielding thugs and murderous assassins, Thraxas knows the value of a flagon of ale and a good bowl of stew.

A fun fantasy romp. Light-hearted, but the story has some good twists and turns. Some very likeable characters and a few good jokes. I’m not saying this is up there with my favourite fantasy books of all time - it was aiming to be something a bit lighter, and certainly not heroic - but I listened to it in a few days because I was enjoying it a lot and keen to see where it went.

Very enjoyable

a comfortable, humourous, swords and sorcery detective story.
it reminded me of a cross between Lindsey Davis's Roman Private Informer 'Marcus Didius Falco' series and Phil Foglio's 'Buck Godot (always available, never free)' sci-fi private eye cartoon series.

entertaining 😁

An amazing book, listened to all of it in one day. Look forward to hearing the rest of the series.

Absolutely Fantastic!

Martin Scott created a wonderful, hugely enjoyable and captivating world of fantasy adventure with frenetic action, mystery and a strong dose of sardonic humour, and it's been brought to life in excellent fashion by this production.
The narrative is fast-paced and bursting with character and world-building, thoroughly immersing the listener in the hectic life of the often hapless titular investigator.
I've been a fan of Thraxas since the first novel, so really hope more of the series will be produced soon! If you're a role-play gamer, these stories feel like the retelling of a really engaging campaign.
If you enjoy this, I heartily recommend the author's other, earlier works (as Martin Millar), such as 'Milk, Sulphate and Alby Starvation' and 'Lux the Poet' for a similar feel in a contemporary vein.

Thoroughly enjoyable fantasy fun!

A good entertaining story with a good narrator. Liked the characters and the story flowed nicely with plenty of humour. Good for Disc World fans. It's unfortunate that this is the only one in the series currently in audiobook.

A ripping yarn
