You’re a survivor, aren’t you, Matilda? But what’s the point in surviving when everyone around you is dead?

When DCI Matilda Darke receives a mysterious telephone call, she immediately dismisses the threat. Afterall the Homicide and Major Enquiries team are a regular target for prank calls.

But ignoring this warning might soon be the biggest regret of Matilda Darke’s life.

A lone gunman is on a deadly rampage around Sheffield, leaving a bloody trail in his wake. Taking his shots with a sickening precision, he’s about to leave his mark on the world and change Matilda and her team’s lives forever.

Fast paced thriller

the level of violence/death in this book was verging on the ridiculous. Where on earth were the armed response people? To be honest it really stretched credibility for me - at one point when a character was shot I was saying out loud 'really??'
So, I am not sure if I will read any more in the series.

Blimey!

Very far fetched compared to the previous books. Devastated that some of my fav characters have been taken out. I was finally getting the hang of who was who. Such a shame

Disappointed

This is a complete departure from the usual in this series; Matilda Darke features hardly at all. South Yorkshire police appears to have more rogue police officers than the real London Met and although a good, well written book, it does stretch credulity at many points. I join other reviewers in doubting that the deaths of so many main and well loved characters bodes well for the rest of the series and question why the author chose to go down this route. Maybe he felt that he’d taken their character development as far as could 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’ve enjoyed the series up until now and will continue to listen but only if the aftermath of this story doesn’t become a repetitive theme in the way that Matilda’s grief for James was in the earlier books. We shall see.

A departure from the usual style

I didn’t enjoy this book. I have listened and enjoyed all the previous ones although it seems like the ‘culprit’ is nearly always someone from within the police service. I have grown to like and become invested in the different characters so it’s such a disappointment that the author has chosen to kill so many of them off, when in my opinion there was so much more for them to give. I’m not looking forward to the next book with so many of the key characters gone when in the real world it’s unlikely those left would ever get over their loss, be the same person or would have perhaps decided to leave the police all together.
