"Three dead coppers, Tom, maybe four by lunchtime."

The targeted murder of four officers is only the first in a series of attacks that leaves police scared, angry and, most disturbingly of all, vengeful.

As Tom Thorne and Nicola Tanner dig into the reasons for the violence, a deeper darkness begins to emerge: the possibility that these murders are payback. The price paid for an unspeakable betrayal.

To uncover the truth, Thorne will be forced to question everything he stands for. He can trust nobody, and the shocking secrets revealed by one terrible night will fracture his entire world.

Critic reviews

If you want consistent page-turning, character-driven and surprising storytelling, then Mark Billingham is your man. He's gone the distance without stumbling once, been at it for twenty-five years and only gets better novel to novel. There's not many that you can say that about. I can't wait to put everything aside to read the next one (MICHAEL CONNELLY)
What The Night Brings might well be the best Tom Thorne novel yet. Billingham is in the form of his life (MICK HERRON)
Billingham's gripping twenty-fifth novel, What the Night Brings, is as suspenseful as it is emotionally charged. It's Billingham's masterful storytelling that makes him stand out as one of crime fiction's finest (KARIN SLAUGHTER)
A sensational, masterful, sharp and shocking thriller. Mark Billingham needs no introduction, but What the Night Brings is a true standout in one of the great crime series of our time (CHRIS WHITAKER)
In What the Night Brings, Tom Thorne is at his dour, brilliant best, hunting down a cop-killer, a journey into darkness that ends in a revelation so shocking it has the legendary detective questioning everything. Topical, wise, and an instant throat-grabber. (VASEEM KHAN)
One of the best British crime writers of his generation - and worryingly for the rest, he keeps getting better. (JOHN CONNOLLY)
Billingham is on top form in What the Night Brings. The sense of impending doom starts on the first page and does not let up throughout.
Thorne is back with his most shocking case yet ... [and] this one cuts close to the bone.

It’s been a while since we had a new Tom Thorne book and with 18 previous books you’d be forgiven for wondering if there was anything new to say. Thankfully, there is plenty more life left in this series. The latest instalment is a very timely look at corruption and the sort of institutionalised abuse that have made the headlines over the last few years. It’s handled beautifully and with a healthy dose of gallows humour that we’ve come to expect. Billingham has raised an already high bar with this book, in my opinion, it’s his best to date, highly recommended.

Masterpiece

I’ve loved all the Thorne books, since Sleepyhead in 2001, and this was definitely one of the best. I’ve had a couple of long-ish car journeys this week and they’ve been made much more bearable, listening to Mark’s excellent narration. There was still about an hour and a half left of the story when I reached home today, so I made a cuppa and listened to the end - and what an ending! I guess it’s just watch this space now….?

Worth waiting for!

Brilliantly paced and twisted, it helps that I'm a long-term fan but still led to a jaw dropping conclusion

WTF!!!
