Between Rooms is a podcast about the spaces we survive, the ones we outgrow, and the ones we finally learn to build for ourselves. I’m Elizabeth McCracken, author of Between Rooms, and each week I sit down with women who have lived through grief, family rupture, caregiving, addiction, burnout, divorce, betrayal, reinvention, and the quiet catastrophes that change a life.

This is not a show about tying pain in a bow or pretending everything happens for a reason. It is a show about telling the truth — about what happened, what it cost, what we carried too long, what we had to release, and what we know now that we could not have known then.

Some rooms break us open. Some rooms teach us to breathe again. And some rooms, if we are brave enough, become the doorway to who we were becoming all along.

  • Between Rooms: The Change Nobody Properly Warned Us About.

In this solo episode of Between Rooms, Elizabeth takes on the midlife topic nobody properly warned us about: perimenopause, menopause, and the full-body shitshow women were expected to endure politely.

Born in 1973, Elizabeth grew up hearing older women refer vaguely to “the change,” but nobody handed over the real survival guide: hot flashes that can make you nauseous, sleepless nights, mood swings, hair loss, frozen shoulder, bladder betrayal, skin changes, lost libido, alcohol intolerance, and the strange grief of not always recognizing the body you still have to live in.

With humor, honesty, and grace, this episode asks why generations of women were taught to stay quiet about their bodies — and what happens when we decide that silence stops with us.

This is not medical advice. It is one woman telling the truth from the messy, sweaty, hilarious threshold between who she was and who she is becoming.

Plus, Elizabeth shares excitement about the upcoming first guest interview with Dr. Janie Pyle, who will soon join Between Rooms for an in-person conversation.

  • Between Rooms - The Mentor

Before inviting other women to share their stories on Between Rooms, I wanted to begin with one of my own.

In this solo episode, I read from “The Mentor,” a chapter from my memoir about the women who shape us, the rooms where we learn who we might become, and the complicated ways guidance, admiration, ambition, and longing can live together.

This is not the most catastrophic room in my story, but it is one of the quieter ones that shaped me deeply. It is about being seen, learning to listen, and beginning to understand that strength is not always about holding everything together. Sometimes, it is about telling the truth about what formed us.

Between Rooms is a place for women’s honest stories — the loud ones, the quiet ones, and the ones we are still learning how to name.

  • Episode 1: The Strong One Finally Sat Down
    Jun 3 2026

In the first episode of Between Rooms, Elizabeth McCracken introduces the emotional heart of the podcast: what happens when the woman everyone counts on finally stops performing strength and starts telling the truth. This solo episode is not the whole story, but the invitation — into conversations about grief, burnout, family complexity, identity, resilience, and rebuilding a life after the storm.
