The Shared Crossing Project’s mission is to positively transform relationships to death and dying through education and raising awareness about shared crossings and their healing benefits. We aim to bring people together in community to support open exploration and discussion of this important topic in a safe place.

Bio

William is a licensed psychotherapist and is the Founder of the Shared Crossing Project. He has developed a series of leading-edge programs that introduce audiences to a broad assortment of experientially based curricula and practices. These programs focus on preparation for a conscious, connecting, and loving end-of-life experience, and they invite exploration of the topic of life after death.

Some of these workshops also impart a series of protocols intended to initiate shared death experiences and other beneficial shared crossing phenomena. William teaches clinical methods to guide end-of-life practitioners in assisting their clients in meaningful integration of their end-of-life experiences.

As the Director of the Shared Crossing Research Initiative (SCRI), William and his research team collect and study extraordinary end-of-life experiences (shared crossings). He is recognized by many as the world’s leading authority on the shared death experience (SDE) having developed research-based typologies that classify the full range of SDEs. He also created the Spectrum of End-of-Life Experiences, a user-friendly guide to assist the dying, caregivers and health care professionals in navigating and understanding phenomena that can manifest at end of life.

William conducts workshops and presents internationally. He recently presented at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Annual Conference. His innovative work has been featured on CNN Online among other media outlets. William’s book entitled At Heaven’s Door: What Shared Journeys to the Afterlife Teach About Dying Well and Living Better was published worldwide by Simon & Schuster in January 2022.

William continues his practice as a licensed psychotherapist at the Family Therapy Institute in Santa Barbara, specializing in end-of-life counseling as a means toward psycho-spiritual evolution. William has served as a Zen Hospice volunteer and his work is informed by his two near-death experiences and a variety of shared death experiences.

This week I'm talking to Greg Halpern about his near death experiences.

Bio

Greg Halpern is a Chicago-based judo world champion, serial entrepreneur, and survivor of thirteen near-death experiences that have profoundly shaped his life, worldview, and sense of purpose.

His first near-death experience occurred at the age of five, following a post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage. As he recalls, the trauma carried him into what felt like an infinite expanse of warm, radiant light, where a powerful voice instructed him to return because there was still work for him to do.

Over the years, Halpern came to view each subsequent near-death experience not merely as an encounter with mortality, but as part of a larger process: a series of extraordinary events that, in his view, cleared his mind and prepared him to receive a deeper understanding of his mission.

By the time of his twelfth near-death experience in 2005, when exposure to chlorine gas from a pool canister seared his lungs and throat, Halpern had developed an unusual relationship with survival. Rather than expecting death, he had come to believe that each crisis carried meaning and direction.

His thirteenth near-death experience proved to be the most consequential. After a ruptured appendix was misdiagnosed as food poisoning for three days, Halpern underwent a six-hour surgery for advanced peritonitis. During his recovery, a fatal over-medication caused him to flatline in his hospital bed.

What he says he encountered in that moment was both haunting and urgent: a vision of global destruction centered around the year 2023, accompanied by a message that he had waited too long to share information he believed could change the world.
