February 2005, just outside Deming, New Mexico. I pulled off I-10 at the Iron Horse Inn because the radio had gone dead and the static was starting to sound like words. The motel was nearly empty. The ice machine in the alcove near Room 6 was running when it shouldn't have been — no power to that wing, they said. But it was the sound it made, like a voice trying to form around something that had no throat. The woman at the front desk warned me not to listen too long. She said it remembers every guest who ever checked in and never checked out.
