In the autumn of 1987, Luna visits Pleasant Grove Church, a small clapboard building outside Belton, Kentucky, to catalog their historical records. She finds a collection of offering envelopes dating back eighty years, each with a name and a date. One envelope catches her attention: from 1923, with no name and a cryptic date. Inside, instead of money, there is a single human tooth. She traces it to a woman named Mary, who disappeared in 1923 after bringing a complaint to the church board. The tooth is the only thing ever found.
