Welcome back to Apple Head Podcast.
With the iPhone 18 launch just around the corner, I thought this would be the perfect time to look back at one of Apple's most talked-about devices of the past year — the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
When Apple first revealed line of iPhone 17 series, the reaction was mixed. Some people loved the new design, while others thought it was one of the strangest-looking Pro models Apple had ever released.
But now, after nearly a year in the hands of real users, the question is simple:
How well has the iPhone 17 Pro Max actually aged?
Let's start with the design.
Interestingly, what many people criticized at launch has become one of the phone's biggest strengths. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is instantly recognizable. Put it next to an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and there's no confusion about which device is newer.
Build quality has also held up surprisingly well. The phone still feels premium after months of use, although the aluminum frame is a bit more vulnerable to scratches compared to previous titanium models. If you're using one daily, a protective case is still a smart idea.
Performance is exactly what you'd expect from Apple's flagship.
Whether you're editing 4K videos, gaming, multitasking, or managing large files, the iPhone 17 Pro Max simply doesn't struggle. Even nearly a year later, it remains one of the fastest smartphones available.
That said, software isn't perfect.
Many users have reported occasional stutters, keyboard glitches, and random bugs throughout different iOS updates. Nothing major, but enough to remind us that software optimization remains a moving target. Fortunately, most of these issues can usually be fixed with a quick restart.
Now let's talk about AI.
This is probably the area where Apple has faced the most criticism.
While Apple Intelligence has improved steadily, competitors in the Android world continue to move faster with image generation, AI assistants, and productivity features. Siri has improved, but it still doesn't feel as capable as some rival AI systems available today.
One area where Apple absolutely delivered is thermal performance.
The new vapor chamber cooling system has made a noticeable difference. Compared to previous Pro Max models, the iPhone 17 Pro Max stays cooler during gaming, video recording, and especially when using 5G for extended periods.
And then there's the camera system.
Nearly a year later, this remains one of the strongest reasons to buy the device. The front camera received meaningful upgrades, stabilization is excellent, and content creators continue to benefit from Apple's industry-leading video quality.
Features like simultaneous front-and-rear camera recording have also become increasingly popular among vloggers and creators.
Battery life deserves recognition too.
Even after months of heavy use, many users continue to report excellent battery health and reliable all-day endurance. For power users, that's arguably one of the most important upgrades Apple made.
So, should you buy an iPhone 17 Pro Max today?
If you're already using an iPhone 16 Pro Max, probably not. The upgrade simply isn't dramatic enough.
But if you're coming from an older iPhone, especially something two or three generations old, the iPhone 17 Pro Max remains an excellent device in 2026.
And with the iPhone 18 about to arrive, it will be fascinating to see whether Apple's next flagship can deliver improvements that feel as meaningful after a full year of use.
