I'm a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives — and I knew about this fraud before the report came out, because I talked to the people who lived it.

Today the House Oversight Committee released a 205-page report putting the scale of Minnesota's Medicaid fraud at up to $9 billion since 2018. The headline is that Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison were warned as early as 2019 and failed to act. That part is true. But there's a part of this story I have firsthand experience with — and it's the part four minutes of cable news won't have room for.

During my Somali community outreach for the Republican Party, I met people who saw this grift up close. They wanted it exposed. But they were afraid — of the providers, of their own community, and most of all of the administration. One man told me he feared for his life. They wouldn't go to authorities connected to the Walz administration, because they believed it would make them a target. That's why this had to go federal.

This is the whole mechanism — how $9 billion walked out the door over six years while the people who tried to stop it got punished for trying. And why the real lesson isn't "the other team is corrupt." It's structural. And it doesn't have a party.

I stood up at the Minnesota Republican state convention and spoke on behalf of Lisa Demuth — the candidate for governor my party didn't end up endorsing. This is my honest account of why, and the bigger problem it exposes.

I'm not here to relitigate the count or the chaos. I'm here to ask the question conservatives keep refusing to ask: if we believe in value for value, what value does the MNGOP endorsement actually provide? Because we haven't won a statewide general election in twenty years — the longest active losing streak of any state Republican party in the country.

Maybe the candidates running past the endorsement aren't dishonorable. Maybe they're trying to break the cycle. And maybe, if we want the endorsement to mean something, we have to make it worth abiding by — not just appeal to honor and hope.

I've been inside the Minnesota Capitol during final week four times now.

I've watched the clock run out. And I've seen something most people miss: the outrage over omnibus bills and back room deals is justified — but the focus is on the wrong thing.

Senators Eric Lucero and Michael Holmstrom called it a failure this week: over 1,100 pages of spending and regulations, rammed through in hours, with no time to read before voting.

They're right about the outcome. But the cause isn't bad legislators. It's a structural system that makes omnibus bills inevitable.

In this video, I walk through the many structural forces that produce this result every single session: hard constitutional deadlines, committee chairs with centralized power, caucus discipline that pressures members to fall in line, and House-Senate brinkmanship that incentivizes waiting until the last minute.

Once you see these dynamics, you can't unsee them. And the fix? It's not better people. It's a fundamentally different structure — likely including constitutional changes that most of the people complaining about the current system might resist.
