But Dostoyevsky would have written it with a tone of fist-waving anger and frustration, while Tolstoy wrote this story with an accepting, non-violent attitude toward the grievances described. A Letter to a Hindu (also known as "A Letter to a Hindoo") was a letter written by Leo Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das on 14 December 1908. The letter was written in response to two letters sent by Das, seeking support from the Russian author and thinker for India's independence from colonial rule. In A Letter to a Hindu, Tolstoy argued that only through the principle of love could the Indian people gain independence from colonial rule.

In the course of this essay, Tolstoy attempts to find answers to the greatest questions of philosophy through science, philosophy, eastern wisdom, and the opinions of his fellow novelists. Finding no workable solution in any of these, Tolstoy recognizes the deep religious convictions of ordinary people as containing the key to true answers. The first attempt at its publication took place in 1882, but Tolstoy's work was removed from the journal by the Orthodox Church. The text was later published in Geneva in 1884 and in Russia as late as 1906.
