"Les Hommes de bonne volonté", parus de 1932 à 1946, constituent l'œuvre majeure de Jules Romains. Cette fresque en vingt-sept volumes, dont l'action s'étend de 1908 à 1933, propose une vaste mise en scène du premier quart du vingtième siècle secoué par la guerre de 1914 et par les bouleversements sociaux qui l'ont précédée et suivie. It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons enthusiasts, and their attempts to build an enormous Columbiad space gun and launch three people — the Gun Club's president, his Philadelphian armor-making rival, and a French poet — in a projectile with the goal of a Moon landing. Five years later, Verne wrote a sequel called Around the Moon.
