First published in 1911, Katherine Mansfield's collection In a German Pension was inspired by her extended stay in a spa town in Bavaria in 1909, during which she suffered a miscarriage. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884-1941) was a New Zealand-born English novelist, famous for his skill at scene setting and vivid plots. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s and remains popular to this day. 'The Little Ghost' tells the eerie story of a man who is grieving deeply following the unexpected death of a close friend, who goes to stay at an old house which has recently been rented by a family with a large number of very boisterous children.

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. 'The Cremona Violin' is the story of Councillor Krespel, an eccentric violin maker who lives with a mysterious woman, Antonia, who has the most beautiful singing voice ever heard by anyone in the town, but she was only ever heard to sing once.
