Jim is a young and naive clerk on a cargo ship plying Asian waters. He harbors romantic fantasies of adventure and heroism that are promptly scuttled one night when the ship collides with an obstacle and begins to sink. Stripped of his seaman's license, convinced of his own cowardice, Jim sets out on a tragic and transcendent search for redemption.

La storia narra di un uomo bianco, riferito come "Tuan" (l'equivalente di Lord o Sir) che viaggia attraverso la foresta pluviale indonesiana. L'uomo è costretto a fermarsi per una notte con un amico malesiano di nome Arsat. Al suo arrivo trova Arsat sofferente perchè la sua amata sta morendo. Arsat racconta all'uomo la storia del suo passato. La storia è colma di simbolismi, quali l'uso del chiaro/scuro, bianco/nero, alba/tramonto.

The natives of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents.

This classic tale, set in the jungle of the Belgian Congo, tells the story of Marlow's search for the powerful and possibly deranged Kurtz, in an atmosphere of evil. This novel was later adapted and updated by Francis Ford Coppola as his film Apocalypse Now.
