The 19th-century Russian writer Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin is primarily known abroad for his poetry, particularly his novel in verse Eugene Onegin. Assembled here are three delightful samples of his prose - three tales of mischance, mayhem, intrigue, and of course, true love. This collection includes novellas The Blizzard, Novel in Letters, and The Lady Peasant.

This novel in verse, said to be the parent of all Russian novels, is a tragic story of innocence, love, and friendship. Eugene Onegin, an aristocrat, much like Pushkin and his peers in his attitude and habits, is bored. He visits the countryside where the young and passionate Tatyana falls in love with him. The Russian Empire of the Czars was a huge and disparate patchwork of peoples ruled by an overbearing elite that employed a middle-class bureaucracy to keep the working class firmly underfoot. Within its vaulted ranks are a role call of many of the greatest literary talents of the ages.

The Queen of Spades stands at the peak of Pushkin's achievement in prose writing. The story was popular with the general reading public at the time, particularly for its striking plot. The story opens with a number of young officers conversing after a card game. One of them, Narumov, wonders why his grandmother, who possesses the secret of winning at the game of faro, never plays. This novel is the first prose work of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837). It was written in 1827-1828 and first published in 1837. The novel begins with a portrait of the manners and morals of French society in the first quarter of 18th century, with Ibrahim's life in Paris, his success in society, and his love affair with a countess. However, "summoned both by Peter [the Great] and by his own vague sense of duty," Ibrahim returns to Russia.

Pushkin began writing his first major work, Ruslan and Ludmila (1820), a kind of fairy story in verse, in 1817. It was based on Russian folktales told by his old nurse Arina Rodionovna. "On seashore far a green oak towers/ And to it with a gold chain bound/ A learned cat whiles away the hours/ By walking slowly round and round. The story is about three sisters. The youngest is chosen by Tsar Saltan (Saltán) to be his wife. He orders the other two sisters to be his royal cook and weaver. They become jealous of their younger sister. When the tsar goes off to war, the tsaritsa gives birth to a son, Prince Gvidon (Gvidón). The older sisters arrange to have the tsaritsa and the child sealed in a barrel and thrown into the sea.

Pushkin was one of the giants of 19th century Russian literature but, unlike Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, he was most famous for his short stories. The Shot, one of his most anthologized, tells the story of a terrible revenge.

Eugene Oneguine is a cornerstone of Russian literature, and its titular character has become an archetype for the so-called superfluous men in Russian literary tradition. Published in serial form from 1825 to 1832, the first complete edition appeared in 1833, with the most recognized version stemming from the 1837 publication. This remarkable work comprises 389 stanzas of iambic tetrameter, featuring a distinctive rhyme scheme known as AbAbCCddEffEgg, where uppercase letters indicate feminine rhymes and lowercase denote masculine rhymes. This unique structure has earned the name Onegin stanza ...
