The tale of Pinocchio is one of the most ingenious growing-up stories ever told. Pinocchio's desire to be a boy is almost thwarted by his desire for mischief. Were it not for the good-natured Geppetto, the Blue Fairy, that "miserable croaker" the cricket, and many others, Pinocchio would be a story of dreams that don't materialize.

Pinocchio is by all odds the best puppet-story to be found anywhere, and we sigh in sympathy with the funny little chap's scrapes and punishments, or chuckle at his pranks, while we feel like exclaiming, "Why, how much Pinocchio must have been like me!" The author of this captivating tale, Signor Lorenzini, or "Collodi" as he liked to call himself after his native town in Italy, lived during the 19th century (1826-90) and devoted himself to writing and education, believing that one pleasing way to teach was through puppet-plays.

La favola "Il Gatto con gli stivali" è stata tratta dalla collana "I Racconti delle Fate" di Carlo Collodi: una raccolta di fiabe che Collodi ha tradotto dal francese e che, come dice egli stesso nella prefazione, "nel voltare in italiano (...) qua e là mi feci lecite alcune leggerissime varianti, sia di vocabolo, sia di andatura di periodo, sia di modi di dire: e questo ho voluto notare qui di principio, a scanso di commenti, di atti subitanei di stupefazione e di scrupoli grammaticali o di vocabolario.

I "racconti delle fate" è una raccolta di fiabe tradotte da Carlo Collodi per l'editore Paggi di Firenze, e pubblicata nel 1875. Contiene l'adattamento italiano delle nove celebri fiabe di Charles Perrault contenute ne I racconti di Mamma Oca, insieme a quattro di Madame d'Aulnoy e due di Madame Leprince de Beaumont.

Questa favola, tratta dai "Racconti delle Fate", è forse la meno conosciuta e al tempo stesso una delle più belle e articolate di questa raccolta, che Collodi ha tradotto dal francese. "La Gatta Bianca", assieme a "L'uccello Turchino", la "La Cervia del Bosco" e "La bella dai Capelli D'Oro", sono state originariamente scritte da Madame d'Aulnoy.
