Luftwaffe pilots fear one weapon more than any other: British Spitfires. Powerful Rolls Royce engines and an ingenious design make the plane fast and manoeuvrable. In 1940, Spitfires and their fearless pilots resist Hitler’s attempts to bomb Britain to submission. The fighter’s success forces Germany’s leaders to develop even more powerful weapons. London is targeted by V-1 and V-2 bombs, forerunners of the Saturn V moon rocket. Meanwhile, on the Eastern Front the supergun Schwerer Gustav fires shells at targets 47 kilometres away.

It is 03:14 on 22nd June 1941. Along a 1,800-kilometre front line that stretches from the Baltic Sea in the north, to Romania in the South, German soldiers are ready for battle. A minute later, all hell breaks loose. The Luftwaffe begins attacking targets behind the Red Army’s front line, and the artillery opens fire. Germany’s dreaded Panzer tanks follow - the spearhead of Operation "Barbarossa", Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union. With 3.7 million soldiers, it’s the largest invasion to date.

On the morning of Sunday 7th December, 1941, 183 Japanese aircraft fly across the quiet American naval base of Pearl Harbor. After a few minutes, oil stocks and airfields are in flames, and several of the United States’ largest battleships are heading towards the bottom of the harbour. The aim of the Japanese surprise attack is to hobble the United States once and for all, giving the empire a free hand to continue its conquests in Asia. But the assault has the opposite effect.

In 1933 Adolf Hitler seizes power after seducing the German people with lavish promises of restoring order, prosperity and the Greater German Reich to its former glories. He then goes to on exploit other Western European powers’ fear of confrontation to rearm the country in direct defiance of the restrictive terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Before his neighbours can react, Hitler has transformed Germany’s armed forces into the most modern war machine of the day. And Hitler is not alone.

The showdown should have been a brief affair, where the German Empire put its neighbours in their place. Encouraged by the spirit of adventure thousands of young men volunteered to defend the nation’s honour. On the other hand, in France, Britain and Russia optimism was just as high: the troops would be home by Christmas. But the reality was quite different. Soon the lines were locked in a deadly mud hell in the heart of Europe, and despite new weapons like poison gas, submarines, tanks and aircraft the war was protracted.

"Soldiers of the Press" was a weekly WWII radio drama series created by the United Press news agency to dramatize the real-life adventures of its war correspondents. The show ran from 1942 to 1945, with each episode being a 15-minute production that used actors, sound effects, and sometimes the actual voice of a correspondent to tell a story based on a recent news wire story. The series was offered for free to local radio stations that subscribed to the United Press news service.

During WWII, American radio served two primary functions: to keep the domestic audience informed about the war through news and commentary, and to boost the morale of troops abroad through dedicated broadcasts. Programs like "America Looks Abroad" and the "CBS World News Roundup" informed the public about the crisis in Europe, while the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) provided entertainment to soldiers overseas. The Voice of America also began broadcasting U.S. war news to European audiences.

"The Sound of War" was an 18-episode radio series, produced by the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company, that documented World War II using actual radio broadcasts from the era. The program combined these historical recordings with orchestral music and narration to provide a chronological account of the conflict, featuring voices like Hitler, Roosevelt, and Churchill.

"Eyes Aloft" was a radio show produced during WWII for the volunteers of the Aircraft Warning Service. The show provided information and updates to the volunteers who were responsible for watching the skies for enemy planes entering American airspace. It was a half-hour weekly broadcast that was also transcribed for broadcast by the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS).

The "Dear Adolf" radio podcast refers to a series from 1942 produced by the Council for Democracy, inspired by letters written to Hitler by ordinary Americans after the Pearl Harbor attack. It is also the title of a BBC "Archive on 4" program from 2012 that examined these historical recordings and their background. More recently, historical podcasts have also released similar content, such as the World War 2 Radio Podcast episode titled "Dear Adolf - Letter from an American Soldier" and Harold's Old Time Radio's "Dear Adolf 42-07-12 (4) Letter From An American Housewife".
