Jonathan Edwards lived from 1703-1758, and was used by God in the American Great Awakening. He is often referred to as America’s greatest theologian. This sermon was preached to encourage every person to make every effort to get into the kingdom of God—that none should be left out. Edwards opened the sermon by defining “pressing into” the kingdom, explaining why every one should earnestly seek it. He reminded the hearers that, by nature, all are in a perishing necessity of salvation, utterly lost when outside the kingdom.

This sermon warmly encourages every person to make the same kind of effort that Ruth made in leaving her people and country to join herself to God and his people in Israel. Edwards used a variety of things to stimulate the unbeliever toward faith and repentance, such as: the goodness of God, the happiness of his people, the misery of turning back as Orpah did, and the earnest desire of God’s people for every hearer to be saved.

This classic by Horatius Bonar is essential to any true minister of the gospel or serious Christian teacher. It greatly helps clarify the central purpose of the gospel minister in calling men to Christ. It also aids in identifying the numerous problems that can creep into the life of a minister through carelessness and indifference. As Bonar explores many of the problems of his day, we find that we still struggle with the same problems in our day.

The New Birth examines the Biblical teaching of regeneration, or being born from above. Because of man’s fallen condition and depravity, God must do a work in a person before he can come to know and love God. This work is known as “the new birth.”
