His man for the job: Maj. Gen. “Little Phil” Sheridan, the bandy-legged Irishman who’d proven himself just the kind of scrapper Grant loved. The search lasted for several days, and when the body was found concealed in a sinkhole, it was obvious he had been hideously tortured and murdered. Based on a true event, this murder and the subsequent search, arrest, trial, and lynching of the alleged perpetrators made headlines the world over.
