Sein Schüler Kriton besucht ihn, um ihn den Termin der Hinrichtung zu nennen und ihn von der notwendigen Flucht zu überzeugen. Sokrates möchte jedoch nicht fliehen. Er erläutert seine Entscheidung ausführlich, u.a. damit, dass man darf Unrecht nicht mit Unrecht vergelten soll und Verpflichtungen, auch ein Gerichtsurteil, einzuhalten sind. Kriton hat Sokrates' Argumenten nichts entgegenzusetzen.

La sua struttura non è in realtà quella di un dialogo ma una successione di orazioni effettuate dagli intellettuali ateniesi, che hanno per oggetto le lodi del dio dell'Amore (Eros). Troviamo qui, fra l'altro, la famosa descrizione dell'uomo ermafrodito, che, tagliato in due dagli dei, cercherà poi nella sua vita, la sua metà mancante, grazie alla quale, e solo grazie ad essa, ritroverà il suo senso di completezza e, quindi, la felicità.
