Frederic Henry, ein junger Amerikaner, verliebt sich im Lazarett in die englische Krankenschwester Catherine Barkley, nachdem er bei einem Sanitätseinsatz an der italienischen Front verletzt wurde. Zurück bei seiner Truppe erlebt er den feindlichen Durchbruch bei Caporetto und entkommt nur knapp der Erschießung als angeblicher Deserteur.

Schwer verletzt wartet der Schriftsteller Harry zu Füßen des Kilimandscharo auf sein Ende. Seine kreative Kraft ist längst erloschen: Seit er an der Seite einer reichen Frau ein luxuriöses Leben führt, hat er nichts mehr geschrieben. In Afrika wollte er zu einem einfachen Dasein zurückfinden. Im Fieberwahn kreisen seine Gedanken um sein vergeudetes Leben und seine ungeschriebenen Bücher, für die es nun zu spät ist.

Hemingway skrev Der er ingen ende på Paris i 1960 på basis af nogle genfundne notater fra hans ungdomsår i Paris i årene 1921-1926, hvor han som nygift korrespondent startede sin litterære karriere.
