A woman’s body lies in the heather, her neck broken. Her horse watches nervously from a few paces away. Despite looking like an accident, it doesn’t take long for DI Callum MacLean, newly arrived in Hampshire from Glasgow, to establish she was murdered. Nor does it take DS Daisy Donaldson, appearing soon after on horseback, long to identify the victim. Whilst Detective Inspector Callum MacLean is settling into his new role in rural Hampshire, a young woman is found dead in the neighbourhood, her identity unknown. For a close-knit community where everyone knows everyone else, this seems very odd, but when a local child goes missing shortly afterwards, panic sets in. It’s not the first such case for the Scottish inspector, yet the last one in Glasgow ended in tragedy.

No one knows why he was attending a local village meeting in the middle of the New Forest on a freezing January night. The post-mortem reveals Stafford was already dead before the car wheels struck him.
