Emil Brune is a South African-born author and proud veteran special needs Dad. In his debut memoir and practical guide, Nothing Exciting: Our journey with traumatic brain injury and severe autism across three countries, Emil shares the raw, vivid, and often laugh-out-loud 30-year odyssey of raising his son Timmy after a devastating car accident in Cape Town - alongside siblings Emma and Luke - while building a life across South Africa, Ireland, and the UK. With his signature heartfelt voice and humour, Emil blends unflinching honesty about the toughest days in special needs parenting with stories of resilience, family fun, and the unexpected comedy that can light even the hardest moments. Organised around ten essential themes - Community, Adaptation, Resilience, Joy, Self-Care, and more - the book weaves moving anecdotes and cultural insight with immediately usable “top tips” for families navigating traumatic brain injury, autism, and complex needs. Far from misery lit, it’s a labour of love and a beacon of hope that proves nothing exciting can still be truly epic. Emil is a market research consultant who holds degrees in African Politics and Business Administration from the University of Cape Town, as well as a Sloan Master’s degree from London Business School. He lives in England with his wife Fran and family. When he’s not writing or advocating for Timmy’s supported living needs, he enjoys rugby, braais, and planning future travel adventures.
