I write about dreamers, doers and rascals in whatever settings the changing media landscape can offer. Favorite writing homes over the years have included The Wall Street Journal, LinkedIn, Forbes, Bloomberg View, Quora, and Fast Company magazine. High points included sharing in a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting in 1997. Low points include a brief stint as Facebook's first "blogger in residence" in 2008. What was I thinking? If you're wondering what it all adds up to, check out "Finding the Story," which is a journalistic memoir that I've just recently published. (May 2026). It's sassy at the beginning, kind-hearted by the end, and a nonstop testimonial to the power of learning from one's mistakes. Over the years, I've written five hardcover books for New York's big commercial publishers, starting with 1992's "Merchants of Debt," an ambitious three-year project that's become an enduring classic in explaining how Wall Street really works. Other titles include the New York Times bestseller "Perfect Enough," "Health Against Wealth," "The Rare Find and "You Can Do Anything." In 2018 I received an honorary doctorate from Washington & Jefferson College. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago. As an adult, I lived in New York City, London, Cambridge MA and Washington DC before settling in northern California. I'm a slow but stubborn hiker. Adventures over the years include trekking in Nepal, Peru and New Zealand, as well as traversing the Grand Canyon and reaching the top of South Africa's Table Mountain. Favorite writers include Thomas Boswell for sports; Kirstin Downey for biographies; Matt Levine for financial commentary and Gretchen McCulloch for slyly decoding our Internet habits.
