About this listen

The past has a way of catching up.

After an eventful introduction to the world of cultivation, Lee Jia and An Eui find their fates inextricably linked by a powerful new bond. They hardly have time to explore their new form of cultivation before the consequences of their actions come to haunt them. Now, threatened by one of the Empire's most powerful sects, Jia and Eui will have to face their pasts and prepare for what the future has in store. Will they be torn apart by adversity, or brought closer together than ever before?

Jia and Eui's adventures continue in this progression fantasy about friendship, self-discovery, personal growth, and of course magical martial arts!

An otherwise well-written book with an interesting premise, severely let down by the author once again spending the entire book hinting at romantic feelings between two of the characters and still not resolving that plot point by the end of the book.

It could be argued that in Book 1 there were plenty of other important things to introduce, and maybe the author thought that focusing on romance would detract from the plot, character introductions and setting descriptions.

But there's no such excuse here. A huge amount of words in this book are devoted to a character fretting about their ability to return another character's feelings, and there isn't even a resolution to their quandry at the end.

As I'm writing this review, I've already started listening to Book 3, so I will say that this one is worth buying if you plan to listen to the whole series, so that you're not completely lost going into Book 3. This novel definitely wouldn't stand alone on its own merits, though.

Still Unresolved Romance
