The pope we’re bringing you now is Pope Benedict XV, who reigned from 1914-1922. There are so many facets to this pope of the First World War, who served only seven years, the bulk of his term having to do directly with the war or the aftermath of the war. Pope Benedict XV was ignored, ridiculed, and copied by the powers of Europe during the war and after it was over. His Papal Peace Note of 1917 was rejected and denigrated by our own President Woodrow Wilson and then ultimately copied and made his own by Wilson in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

We follow Mother Mary on a journey again to a far-off place high up in the mountains, where no one would consider going. We have never really paid much attention to what towns are located where in Japan, other than Tokyo, Nagasaki, and Hiroshima. In looking on a map, we find Akita to be a thriving metropolis in the north of the country, with a population of about 300,000 people - a lot more than you would consider for a small town in the mountains of Japan.

Because of these brave martyrs, we have a church today; we have a country today; we have a world today. They gave their lives so that our church may survive and spread to the four corners of the Earth. The book covers various martyrs throughout history.

When we talk of saints who have been maligned, misunderstood, and mistreated, no one deserves more a place in this book than venerable Pope Pius XII. We have learned late in life that the history passed down depends on the authors, not necessarily on the facts. We can remember in our lifetime, the escalator of our emotions and intellect, as a country ascended from enemy to friend and then descended, back again, from friend to enemy.

March 25 is the Feast of the Annunciation. On this particular year 1945, it fell on Palm Sunday. This is such an important season in our church. But in those times, during the final days of the war, thoughts were not focused on Palm Sunday, or the Feast of the Annunciation, or even Easter, for that matter. Ida Peerdeman, the woman to whom the virgin Mary chose to come, called it a "hunger winter". Priests would visit private homes, rather than take a chance on Nazi retaliation for trying to perform religious ceremonies, like Mass, especially not in public places, like churches.

The Sacraments are one of the greatest sources of strength the Lord has given us, major weapons against Satan and his fallen angels. Why do you think the Sacraments have been under attack since the beginning of the Church? You know that Satan is going to try to destroy any of these gifts the Lord has given us because he knows the power they wield.

Prophetess of Germany, visionary, mystic, doctor of the Church. We know Our Dear Lady was upset about how her priests and nuns, as well as the laity were being treated. She had always been so loving to her children. It was she whom Jesus allowed to intercede on our behalf. We drove him beyond reconciliation, and yet, because of her, he allowed his arms to be held back. It did not seem that mankind was going to get any better. It was time for tribulation. But the Mother, the loving Mother, asked again for one more chance to reason with her children, and again, the gift was given by the Son to the Mother.

Saint Teresa later wrote of Saint John of the Cross: "I realized that he was a saint, and had always been a saint." Before her was a figure tiny in physical stature, as the world measures, but a towering giant in the eyes of the Lord. She recognized the same fire burning in him that raged inside of her. She was 52; he was 25. She, a nun twice his age! He, a young friar with a dream to become a Carthusian hermit.

Seldom in history do we find a shrine and a village that owes its existence to one man and his dream. As unique as this is, rarer still is a sanctuary village with the ancient heritage of pre-Christ Pompeii.
